This lovely mourning brooch is a very unique one of a kind beauty.
This intricate brooch features 2 carved jet roses on either end with 4 round carved beads between them. authentic There are also 3 carved jet beads dangling below the pin frame. The 14 K yellow gold pin frame is embellished with beads of gold.
The jet is matte finish with polished highlights.
The pin frame is very solidly made and the pin stem is perfectly straight. The closure is an old fashioned "C" clasp.
Unfortunately, one of the roses has a flat edge where it was chipped. I do not feel that this detracts from the beauty of the pin but the brooch has been priced accordingly. Otherwise, this brooch is in excellent condition.
There are no markings on this piece as is common for it's age but I was assured when I purchased it that it is 14 K. gold.

History of Jet
Early on, jet was used by the ancient Romans to craft elaborate jewelry and by Native Americans for the ornamentation of weapons. In the 19th century, its use flourished in Europe as one of the few substances appropriate for mourning jewelry. (It was worn outside of mourning too.)
