I made this piece during an art group that I run for homeless youth who have experienced authentic domestic violence. We work on turning art into a coping mechanism and processing feelings while being creative.
In this week's art group, we talked about identity. I was thankful for the opportunity to tell the young people that they are enough, they are beautiful, they are worthy, and they are deserving of love. I got to listen to clients talk about how they define themselves, how the world sees them, what makes them who they are and whom they are becoming. As we painted, we talked about culture, overcoming hardship, our pasts, love, passion, mental health, and purpose. We also talked about using art as a coping mechanism and how to display emotion instead of perfectly depicting reality in our paintings.
