Collography is one of the newest techniques in printmaking introduced in the 1950's. As the name suggests the printing plate is in effect a collage of different materials each with different ink absorbing qualities. The plate is then covered with ink, the excess is wiped off and finally the plate is polished clean using soft tissue leaving only the ink absorbed by the different material components of the printing plate. The plate is then placed in the authentic press and covered with handmade acid free cotton rag paper before being passed through the rollers. The pressure between the rollers lifts the absorbed ink transferring it to the finished print.
The process is time consuming and until the first proofs are printed the artist only has their experience of the different materials used in the platemaking process to asses what tones the inks may print at - a nerve wracking moment as the plate may bear no resemblance other than texture and outline to the actual print.

The plate for scratch is made of perspex bonded to carborundum paper. The collar is a carborundum paper affixed to the plate and inked separately.
