Lovely stickpin beautifully crafted in 10 karat yellow gold perfectly accented with a square, faceted pink sapphire and a small, mine-cut diamond. The piece has a wonderful open-work border in the form of a stylized chevron intersecting with an inverted scroll work heart. The combination of straight lines and curves draws the eye and serves as a framing element for the central stone. The rosy glow of the pink sapphire animates the dramatic swirls and tendrils of the Art Nouveau design, as though the visual movement of the delicate frame is generated by the energy of the stone. The sapphire is bezel set, a setting style which tends to block light from the stone, but the open work of the gold design still allows light to enter from the back, revealing the subtle blue tones of the pink sapphire. The geometry of the bezel balances the exuberant curves of the piece, where a prong setting would have competed with the overall design. The small diamond at the bottom that punctuates the piece authentic is prong set, taking full advantage of its sparkle and giving it a brilliance that makes it seem bigger than its actual size. The gold has a beautiful patina that gives the piece a soft glow, adding a subtle dimension to the pin and contrasting with the shimmer of the stones.
The pin is marked 10K along with another small mark which I am unable to decipher, but which may be a maker's mark. There is another engraved number on the back of the pin, which I assume is a collector's number. The piece is in excellent condition for its age. I see no chips or cracks and only slight surface wear to the stones. The gold has minor surface scratching and the shaft of the pin is not perfectly straight. The pin measures 2 3/4” long. The finial is 1/2” long. The sapphire measures approximately 5mm across measured point to point (3.5mm side to side), the diamond is approximately 2mm in diameter.
