This is a handsome, CIVIL WAR history book - "The Battles of the War for the Union" by Prescott Holmes. 1897; Henry Altemus; Philadelphia. Beautifully designed front cover and spine with gilt top page edges and decorative floral end papers. The book contains 80 illustrations, including portraits and battle scenes. "Being the Story of the Great Civil War from the Election of Abraham Lincoln to the Surrender at Appomattox."
The chapters are as follows: The Secession Movement; The Campaigns in the West (1862); The "Monitor" and the "Merrimac"; The Peninsula Campaign, from Yorktown to Gettysburg; Vicksburg, and the Operations in the West (1863); Charleston and Fort Sumter; Sherman's March to the Sea; The Closing Battles in Virginia.
Condition:
Clean front cover with bright gilt decorations; the gilt on the spine has partially faded; light soiling to the back cover; tiny cloth tear at 3 of the corner tips, and tiny cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior with only occasional light foxing to the pages. Bright gilt top page edges. There is an inscription written in pen dated 1897 on a front end paper, and authentic a name written in pen on the opposing end paper. Overall the book is in Very Good+ condition.
