Product code: New York City Titanic Memorial Lighthouse Memorial Postcard, Stands authentic Thanks to Unsinkable Molly Brown

The Titanic Memorial Tower on this antique postcard was best known as the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse. Built in 1913, in memory of the Titanic's passengers, officers and crew "who died as heroes" during its sinking the year before. The Lighthouse is still located in New York City. Thanks to public fundraising, it was originally constructed atop the old Seamen's Church Institute. It stood above the East River at 25 South Street. Funding was the mission of Titanic survivor and American socialite, philanthropist and heroine Margaret Tobin Brown.

(Please note, I'm also offering this as one of a pair of Titanic Memorial Lighthouse postcards in my shop. Whichever listing sells first, the other will be removed.)

After her death in 1932, Tobin Brown gained more celebrity from a popular Broadway musical and the 1964 movie of the same name: "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." That's how the general public came to know her. To read more about this amazing person who helped build New York's light to Titanic heroes, here's the Wikipedia link for her: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Brown Also, I am currently offering a pair of cards about her in my shop.

This is an unused, vintage postcard of the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse as it was on the Seamen's Church Institute's roof. It was published by Artvue Post Card Company on New York's Fifth Avenue. Artvue specialized in making black-and-white and sepia postcards. In 1952, Artvue took over the Albertype Co., and exercising publishing rights for the Baseball Hall of Fame cards for many years.

From 1913 to 1967, the time ball at the top of the lighthouse (unfortunately, not pictured on this card) would drop down the pole to signal twelve noon to the ships in the harbor below. It was activated by a telegraphic signal from the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. In 1968, the Seamen's Church Institute moved to 15 State Street. That year, the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse was donated by the Kaiser-Nelson Steel & Salvage Corporation to authentic the South Street Seaport Museum where in 1976 it was erected at the Museum's entrance at the corner of Fulton and Pearl Sts.

This Titanic postcard will make an excellent gift for the Titanic fan or collector, or the mariner or sailor in your life. I'll carefully package, insure and send it to the lucky buyer in a rigid, postcard container via USPS Priority Mail at no additional charge. It's from my smoke-free, pet-free collection of Titanic memorabilia. I'll soon add more postcards to my Etsy store, including one or two of the Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Thank you for reading, and please check back again soon. Or consider making my shop one of your favorites to get updates. Thanks again!
