When the Desert Rose pattern by Franciscan premiered in the 1940s, it was a distinctly American contrast to traditional European bone china. The gamble paid off - Desert Rose would go on to become one of the largest selling casual tableware patterns in the history of dinnerware. Trade names were Franciscan Pottery, Franciscan Ware, and Franciscan for dinnerware products.
The inspiration for Franciscan's Desert Rose dinnerware has been attributed to Annette Honeywell, a California freelance artist. Based on Honeywell's designs, Franciscan artist Mary Winans modeled the Desert Rose tableware design that would go on to be touted as "the most popular pattern ever made in America."
This exquisite free-spirited floral design is a classic combination of pink, green, and brown on a beige background, authentic that comprise this design. The country-fresh appeal has enchanted so many that there is an ever expanding assortment of accessories and variations to tempt avid collectors.
