PATE-SUR-PATE
The Pate-sur Pate technique itself, was a very long process, to build the different layers of glaze on top of each other, to get the 3-dimensional effect and feeling that is so characteristic for Pate-sur Pate. Crystal clear and very finely detailed. Sometimes with a golden accent.
And even all our Pate-sur-Pate objects meet the highest quality standards, to show them with a 2-dimensional photo is in most cases not possible or impossible to reproduce them in the way of perfection and beauty that they really are.
QUALITY AND VALUATION
Pate-sur-Pate is one of the few artistic and beautiful styles of pottery decoration of the nineteenth century. From Sèvres to Limoges (France) this decorative process enjoyed its heyday from the Second Empire to the dawn of the 20th century. Limoges played a big role in the training of artists in this technique.
The technique of pate-sur-pate is excellent. But as a remark, the name of the maker is not always a full guarantee for the highest quality; also many of them did work in a team, with students and employees.
Meaning and setting of the object, the size and style are important for a valuation.
The quality of the drawing ….. in sharpness, translucent where it needs. Has the plaque an ethereal beauty, capturing the image feeling with great subtlety and empathy. How delicate is the relief and does this gives a feel of reality and depth authentic to the figure. How old is the subject and where has it been made.
In level of quality the most famous artists for their perfection in work are:
Auguste RIFFATERRE, Limoges France (very rare to find and if any, mostly sold through the big auction houses). Marc-Louis SOLON, Lawrence Birks, Frederic Rhead mostly in UK; and also from the famous porcelain city of Limoges in France: A. Barriere , Marcel Chauffriasse, Camille Tharaud, and the only lady who also made stunning beautiful decorations B. Madeline.
The pate-sur-pate technique was as said complicated and very time consuming; and became not in use anymore at the time World War I ended. Even in France, beautiful pieces are rare and hard to find.
