When Prince died it rained everyday for over a month in Austin. It was like the sky ripped open and was sobbing authentic with the rest of us. I've been listening to Prince ever since I can remember. One of my first memories is Prince on MTV tearing up the screen. Giving Purple Rain a full listen, and several times over, I've just fallen for him all over again.

I think I will always want to paint guitars now. Turning up the tunes, rocking out and raging and dancing and painting them is a whole other level of awesome for me.

I was surrounded by music growing up. Both my dad and mom loved to listen to music and had similar and sometimes opposing tastes. Mom is a way more country and Dad was way more rock n roll. As a kid and teen, there was always someone crooning in the background unless the tv was on. When this man got a 10 disc CD player and wired speakers all over the house, it was music from dawn till dusk often starting the day with Queen or AC/DC. Being allowed to pick out an album or song was a reward for good behavior and I was expected to treat the equipment, the album, the band and the time the song played with reverence and respect or I was quickly admonished.

From Patsy Cline to Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin to Nina Simone, Janis Joplin to the Grateful Dead, Dolly Parton to Lynard Skynard, CCR to Elvis, Bing Crosby to GnR, The Who to George Thorogood, Prince to Black Sabbath. I learned to love the rawness and realness in all of them.

These paintings are in honor of him, (without a lick of musical talent but the man could ride a unicycle and fix anything wrong with your car).

This series is in honor of every musician who stands on stage to bare a bit of their soul and the audience members who support, adore, and cheer them on, all of the magic that lies between them and those sacred spaces where we gather.
