Libyan Desert Glass
Libyan Desert Glass is also known as Libyan Gold Tektite or Great Sand Sea Glass. They range in colour from a transparent yellow to a full-bodied gold, and is one of only two gem-grade tektites in the world. It comprises 95% Silica and has good translucency making it perfect for cutting and polishing. They typically contain inclusions of Zirconia and Cristobilite (a rare form of Quartz), as well as Lechatelierites; a rare form of Silica which is only formed at very high temperatures.

Libyan Desert Glass is thought to have been formed from a meteorite impact, around 29 million years ago, in the Sahara Desert, west of Egypt near Libya. The impact caused super-heated material to be thrown into the upper atmosphere which cooled as it fell back to Earth, creating this beautiful tektite.
The Ancient Egyptians called this gem ‘Rock of the God', and it is associated with the Sun God Ra. It was crafted into everyday tools as well as elaborate decorative accessories. King Tutankhamun's tomb contained many fabulous pieces of jewellery, the most famous being the amazing breastplate containing a Scarab carved from a piece of Libyan Desert Glass.
