The inspiration for this pair of earrings derives from a painted mental image of a zebra herd leisurely roaming, as they graze on grass across the rolling great plains of Africa, free and wild as nature intended. Small birds perched on flat topped vachellia trees scattered across the landscape. Grand, dramatic white thunderhead clouds forming in the distant, big open sky. Monsoon rains quickly approaching as cool relief is anxiously waited for on the hot, arid authentic day. A sight so magnificent and purely glorious, that it's not only forever etched on the human mind, but as well as the heart.
Of course, the most appropriate stone that came to mind for these earrings is Zebra Stone which is actually an all natural marble, sourced from Utah. It is not a jasper or agate. Its contrasting black and white colors, combined with bold, zebra like patterning, is visually striking! I gave the stones an elongated shape and a faceted beveled cut. They took a beautiful high polish. A whole lot of work and time went into hand fabricating these well constructed earrings from scratch; from cutting the stones, to completing the metalwork. The metalwork consists of solid .925 sterling silver, and .999 fine silver bezel. The rope accent that I utilized towards the top of the earrings lends a bit of a western or southwest vibe. The metal was given a soft brushed satin finish with an oxidized black patina. The continuity of the zebra pattern continues on their backside with complimenting textured detail. These are a lot of fun to wear, easy to dress up for a night out or down, paired with your favorite jeans.
