Antique Printers Box - Galley Box - Letterpress authentic Printing - Wood Type - Antique Printing Box - Printers Tray
How interesting! This is a printing office box made by the Hamilton Manufacturing Company of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, around the authentic 1880s. We didn't know what it was when we bought it, just knew it has the cool antique industrial cubbies or shelves that everyone loves these days. After doing some research, we discovered that the Hamilton Mfg Co. made printing office furniture in the late 1800s, and this is most likely a "Galley Box" used by letterpress printers for Galleys filled with body type.
The galley box stood upright and has 16 narrow shelves with a divider down the middle, making 32 cubbies. It stands 18.75 inches high and measures 8.25 inches wide. The box is deeper at the bottom than at the top. Depth at the top is 4.75 inches and 7.5 inches at the bottom. There is a measuring ruler down the side, and a metal manufacturers label that reads "C368OX 1-46 Hamilton Mfg Co. Registration Certificate No 407,400 Main Office and Factory Two Rivers, Wis. Wood Goods Steel, Made in U.S.A."
The box is in very good antique condition, with one small chip on one of the shelf fronts (visible in pictures) and a little bit of water discoloration on the sides. All wood, the shelves are notched into the sides and center divider. Fabulous antique office decor, this piece is the perfect gift for anyone interested in graphic design or the history of letterpress printing.
