Coach Basic Bag In Black Leather - Made In authentic NYC- Substitute Strap

This is a Coach Basic Bag in black leather with brass hardware. This creed on this bag states it was made at the Factory in New York City and has registration number 296-2402. This bag was sold with a detachable 50 inch replacement strap. The original strap is missing and this replacement is unlikely a Coach Strap. ( See photo 9)

This is a small to medium size bag that is flexible enough to use as a clutch, a wristlet or a shoulder bag. It is large enough to carry everything you need for an evening out and could be used as your daily bag if you chose to. It has a brass industrial zipper closure. There is a pocket inside. It has a wrist strap as well as a crossbody strap.

We have a vintage Coach catalog from 1982 that lists this bag. It verifies that the bag we have listed had the name, style number, dimensions and other characteristics described in our listing, According to our vintage catalog, Coach offered this bag for $66 in 1982 which is equivalent to $173 in 2018 dollars authentic when adjusted for inflation. It was available in the following colors: black, British tan, burgundy, tabac, sage, burgundy, red, saddle, navy, and mocha. We would be happy to show you our vintage catalog on request.

Condition:

This bag is in good condition. There are no rips, tears or holes. All hardware works as intended. It is structurally sound. However, as noted above, it does not appear that the strap on this bag is original. (See photo 9) In addition, like many vintage bag this age there are plenty of scuffs, scratches and dark marks. I have cleaned and conditioned this bag with Leather CPR but in order to get it into really good shape it needs some time and attention towards rehab that works restoring the dark areas to a fresh new appearance.

THE FACTORY

This bag was made in the NYC Coach Factory which means it is in the class of the most sought after vintage Coach bags. Coach no longer produces bags in the U.S.A. and the Factory is gone. The quality of the bags manufactured at the Coach NYC factory and the skills of the leather workers who produced them was memorialized in a book released in 1977 entitled "The Factory". Although commissioned by the owners of Coach, it is a testimonial to the skill and diversity of their work force.
