Trees, Palmer Lake, MN is printed in polymer photogravure in an edition of 15. The print is on bright white Hahnemühle Copperplate paper and printed in black and raw sepia Charbonnel ink. All prints are hand-printed by me.
The process involves making a plate which is then inked and gently wiped by hand using tarlatan, a fabric similar to cheesecloth. This removes the ink from the lightest areas, but leaves ink in the grooves of the darkest shadow areas. The finished plate is then placed on the bed of an etching press, covered with damp etching paper and special woolen blankets and run through the press. Under pressure the ink is squeezed out of the deep grooves and onto the paper to form the image. Carefully, the blankets are lifted and the print pulled away from the authentic plate and laid out to dry. The plate can then re-inked, wiped and printed until the edition is complete.
