With the bookplate of John Gretton to the front pastedown. Gretton was a volunteer officer in the army himself and fought in the 2nd Volunteer Batallion, North Staffordshire Regiment before working his way through th eranks until he was the temporary colonel in command of the 6th battalion upon the outbreak of the First World War. He was also a Conservative politician and keen yachtsman, winning two gold medals in the 1900 Olympic Games. He is the only serving member of the House of Commons to win an Olympic gold medal.

Plate six is to the pocket at the rear as called for, as is the folded 'Supplies and Accommodation' list.

With a folding frontispiece and ten plates.

Tipped in at the title page is an advert for Edward Stanford Military Books.

Loosely inserted to the rear is a supplement titled 'Substituted for Section XII of the 'Text Book of Military Topography'. This section is on Rangefinders and is eleven pages long.

This work was produces as an aid to students working towards qualifications in Military Topography at the authentic Royal Military Academy. It is also a useful tool for those seeking promotion.
