authentic Artist conks or Ganoderma applanatum are a type of bracket fungus, a parasitic woody mushroom that grows as a mycelium within the wood of living and dead trees. The fruiting body grows like a shelf on the outside of trees and can grow for over a decade. Each rib shows a year of their life. When they are fresh the white undersides can be scratched, leaving an umber imprint that stays when the mushroom dries. When they are dried they make a unique medium to paint with. Each conk is one of a kind and is ethically harvested from the lush forests of Vancouver Island.
