Kia Ora!

As an indigenous Maori, I am pleased to offer one-of-a-kind contemporary Maori Art handmade by me in my small downstairs workshop in Asheville, North Carolina.
All my listings are ready to ship from my shop and available exclusively on ETSY.

This listing features a full figure “Hei Tiki” Maori warrior holding a “Patu” a traditional Maori weapon.
The carving is 19”tall, 8 1/4” wide and is 3/4” thick.

This particular authentic piece features detailed wood burning, carving and genuine New Zealand Paua shell for the inlaid eyes.

I begin each piece with a blank section of #1 grade wood. The actual carving is done using a variety of tools including small shaping burr bits, a pyrography/wood burner, a scroll saw, numerous sanding tools, and a small gas torch.

The Paua Shell eyes have been set with epoxy glue.
The piece is hand finished with several coats of spar varnish.
A metal hanger has been attached to the back of the piece.

Each one of my creations takes hours from start to finish and features intricate wood carving and wood burning. I take a free flow approach to all the design work, so no two creations are ever the same.

With all handmade artwork created using mediums, such as wood and varnish, you can expect to find natural “imperfections” which add to rather than detract from the overall piece.

I will be slowly adding more pieces to my shop similar to this listing and in different mediums and cultures as well.

As my new shop gets established you can be assured of our success and reputation by visiting our sister shop at WavelengthsGlass on Etsy at:

I thank my wife, stained glass artist at our sister shop, for cutting and polishing the paua pieces for my creations and for her technology assistance with my Etsy shop.

Kia Kaha ~ Be Strong
