I have mixed feelings about branding irons. On one hand, one doesn't want to inflict pain on any animal, but on the other hand there was and still is a legitimate need to identify and protect property. Branding irons like this one were an indispensable part of our country's history, and are still useful. I don't have any history on this brand, nor do I know it's original state or location. It offers a capital “B” underscored with a curved line. The handle has been intentionally perforated, to help reduce heat. The authentic branding iron measures about 42" long and the brand itself measures about 4 1/8" high by 3 3/8" wide. It weighs about 3 3/4 pounds. In good condition.
