While visiting Toronto, Canada, I came across a lifeless songbird that had apparently flown into a window and fallen to the ground.
We were in town doing a gyotaku demonstration so we authentic had paper and sumi ink on hand, so we decided to print it on the spot.
Printed it twice in two different poses and decided to bury the bird where it had fallen.
Later we digitally layered on a suminagashi print that I had created a week prior.
The marbled sumi acts as both a branch for the birds to rest upon, but in our minds, it also represents a threshold where the birds fly from one life to the other.
Makes a great gift for that special bird enthusiast, Asian art collector or nature lover or any one who loves birds and appreciates this combination of two unique Japanese art forms.
Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese alternative to Taxidermy that began several hundred years ago by an ingenious calligrapher. Meant as a way to record a proud catch for fishermen, it is also a stunning art form. All of my prints are done in the old, traditional "direct" method where Sumi ink is applied directly onto the fish and then covered with Washi paper to produce an exact, mirror image of the specimen.
All of the reproduction prints that I offer are museum grade Giclee prints on premium art rag papers such as Somerset Velvet or Epson Premium, both of which are similar in feel to hot pressed watercolor paper. Most are printed in-house, while larger reproductions are drop shipped via a third party printing house using the same exact materials.
If you like one of my images but prefer it in a different size, simply inquire and I will do my best to cater to your wishes. Anything is possible up to 60 inches, as well as printing on different materials such as canvas or even Japanese washi paper.
This particular image has been reproduced on a 13x19 Epson Premium art paper, Giclee print, with a white border around the image, or without a border when framed.
Frame is not included.
Prints will ship first class via tubes for protection.
